A cornerstone of academic and diagnostic excellence within the School of Pathology and the National Health Laboratory Service.
The Department of Anatomical Pathology operates across three dynamic diagnostic/academic units situated at key hospitals including Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Braamfontein (Cytopathology Unit), and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
With a commitment to quality, our SANAS-accredited laboratories offer diagnostic services to provincial hospitals in Gauteng and the North West Province. Moreover, we extend our expertise through referral consultations to countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and private pathology practices
Academic excellence, teaching and training.
Education lies at the heart of our mission. We actively engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, nurturing the next generation of medical professionals. Consultants and registrars play pivotal roles in delivering lectures, facilitating small-group problem-based learning, and providing clinicopathological teaching during surgical rotations.
Our postgraduate programs span various disciplines, from anatomical pathology to tropical medicine and hygiene. Registrars enrolled in the MMed (Anatomical Pathology) program benefit from a structured academic curriculum alongside their surgical pathology training.
In our commitment to fostering excellence, medical technologists and technicians undergo rigorous training, combining theoretical knowledge with practical bench skills. Through weekly lectures, hands-on training, and dedicated study time, we ensure their continuous growth and development.
Research.
Research is a cornerstone of our department, focusing on the pathology of cancers, bacterial and viral diseases, and exploring gene expression profiles and signaling pathways. Our goal is to validate novel molecular markers, driving innovation in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and expanding human capacity in anatomical and molecular pathology.
